During the 1980s, when the overall number of challenges to books for children and teens is estimated to have quadrupled, Judy Blume became the American author for young people whose work was most frequently banned. High on the list of Blume's controversial novels was this one, which dealt candidly with the onset of puberty in girls and an 11-year-old's questioning attitude toward organized religion. Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. was first published in 1970 by the small, independent Scarsdale, New York-based Bradbury Press. It was two years later, however, when the Dell Yearling paperback edition appeared, that young people who could afford to buy copies with their own money made it a bestseller and Blume a cultural force to be reckoned with.
