This landmark work, winner of the 1963 Caldecott Medal, is one of the first American picture books to feature a child of color. It is set in an impressionistically rendered version of East New York, Brooklyn, where the artist, born Jacob Ezra Katz, spent his Depression-era childhood. Here, Peter enjoys a carefree day of playing—and grandly making his mark—in the snow. In subsequent books, Keats introduced readers to his young hero's friends and neighbors in an unprecedented exploration of the lives and dreams of inner-city New York children.
