In January 1920, in response to the persistent lack of reading matter for African American children, W. E. B. Du Bois introduced a monthly magazine for young people featuring fiction, poetry, historical pieces, puzzles, and art. Modeled on St. Nicholas, The Brownies' Book aimed to instill racial pride in the "Children of the Sun," and to offer its readers a "thing of Joy and Beauty, dealing in Happiness, Laughter, and Emulation." Langston Hughes published his first poem in the magazine, and Du Bois himself contributed a column called "As the Crow Flies." In a publishing environment that was indifferent at best to the interests of the nation's African American population, The Brownies' Book struggled to find its audience and after 24 issues ceased publication, in December 1921.
