Kate Greenaway and Randolph Caldecott, who were casual acquaintances and more or less friendly rivals, both produced picture books for Edmund Evans, an innovative English color printer and entrepreneur who earlier in his career had engaged the services of Walter Crane. For this volume based on a traditional alphabet rhyme, Greenaway created some of her most amusing and animated depictions of beautifully dressed, middle-class Victorian children at play.
