The few books published in [Beatrix Potter's] later years were primarily based on ideas conceived in the early part of her life and were not considered critical successes. The Fairy Caravan (1929) is notable in that it is more autobiographical than her previous works, but, wrote Marcus Crouch in Three Bodley Head Monographs, "It is nevertheless a sad book, as every work of fading genius must be sad." Indeed, Potter herself recognized its weakness and only allowed a limited printing in the United States and England.
