Bob Barner was born in Tuckerman, Arkansas. He graduated from the Columbus College of Art and Design and studied with Milton Glaser at School of Visual Arts. Barner worked as an art therapist and then as an art director and illustrator before starting a publishing career. Barner worked as an artist for cartoonist Al Capp’s Lil’l Abner comic strip. He developed his collage style by working for numerous children's illustration clients.

Barner has written and illustrated many fiction and non-fiction picture books for young readers ages 4-8.

At this writing, he and his wife, Catherine, reside in San Francisco where he has focused on creating picture books for young readers. He enjoys speaking to young readers at schools and libraries throughout the world.
