A DANGEROUS PRECEDENT?
The action taken by the Hennepin County Grand Jury in the
indictment of three AAAC leaders, Horace Huntley, Rose Mary Freeman,
and Warren Tucker, has serious implications not only for AAAC but also
for the University Community as a whole. Outside political and civil
authorities should not interfere with the internal affairs of the University.
Any outside action on the part of the civil authorities should only occur
at the request of the University.
WE DEPLORE:
--The timing of the indictment. Any Grand Jury action should have been
initiated immediately following the takeover or postponed until the
University Commission released its final report. With the approach of
spring break and the disbanding of the Grand Jury, the indictments
indicate motives other than the cause of justice.
--The political overtones of the arrest. The action singles out the AAAC leaders
with the intent to disrupt the organization.
--The unfortunate lack of confidence displayed by the civil authorities and
the community in the University administration's competence to handle its
own affairs.
As governing boards of student organizations we are concerned that this
action may constitute a precedent for future interference in student affairs
We urge every student to consider the possible repercussions of the Grand
Jury's actions.
