SUPPORT FREEDOM AND JUSTICE ----- DROP THE INDICTMENTS

N O W !!

Wednesday, March 5, three University of Minnesota students were arrested by the
Minneapolis Police as a result of an indictment issued by the Hennepin County Grand
Jury on the last day of its session. Horace Huntley, Rosemary Freeman, and Warren
Tucker were charged with aggravated criminal damage to property, inciting riot, and
two counts of unlawful assembly for their role in the Morrill Hall demonstration
last January. If convicted, these students will face sentences of up to six years.

Although these are trumped up, absurd charges which should never stand up in court
(there was no riot, the damages to the Administration Building were paid for, and
the university never declared the students to be unlawfully assembled), this is not
the real issue. The legal action directed at the leadership of the AAAC is a vin-
dictive attempt to break the back of a student political organization struggling
for social change. As many as 300 people sat in at Morrill Hall, yet only the
black leaders were arrested. This is an act of vengeance and intimidation to
frighten and harass potential supporters of all student political groups.

County Attorney George Scott and the grand jury have given notice to all groups
working for changes in American society, changes which must be accomplished if this
country is to avoid civil war, that, unless the changes and methods fit their concep-
tions, they will harass and penalize them. Do not think that you are exempt: even-
tually, you, too, will become an object of these attacks.

As a result, and in response to this action by the Hennepin County Grand Jury and
the County Attorney, a 24 hour a day sit-in will be held outside George Scott's
office on the Fourth Floor of the Minneapolis City Hall until the indictments are
dropped. The sit-in will begin at noon on Friday, March 7, 1969, and continue
as long as necessary. Support your fellow-students and citizens in their fight
for justice by either joining the sit-in, contributing funds, or organizing others
in your community to voice their dissatisfaction with the action of the grand jury.

This protest is supported by virtually every campus organization, including student
government, fraternities and political groups. For information, either come to
City Hall or call 373-2414 and ask for the Ad Hoc Support Committee.
