Subject
1918
Description
Typed letter addressed to The Honorable Board of Regents from representatives of the following University of Minnesota student organizations: All University Council, Board of Governors of the Minnesota Union, Grey Friars, Iron Wedge. The text of the letter is as follows:
"The Honorable Board of Regents:
Gentlemen:
Realizing the vital necessity of the unifying force of a Minnesota spirit, we are concerned that every effort should be made to keep alive that influence in the student body and to foster its development.
With the growth and expansion of our university, the tendency toward separate spirit within individual colleges is increased and the unity of the whole is in the growing complexity of the system. Because of the rapidly falling personnel of the student body, the departure of the older men and women for war service, and the general unsettled condition within the university, we feel that more than ever before Minnesota must be emphasized - made to stand above all else clear.
We believe that the Minnesota Daily is the outstanding factor to be considered in the development of this unity of spirit and that its power is measured by the number of the students it reaches. At present the subscription list includes less than one-half the students, the majority of whom are upper classmen, men and women who are already interested in university affairs. Those people who need the influence of the Daily most are those that it doesn’t reach.
In the face of the departure of the older students, we earnestly recommend that a subscription to the Daily be made a necessary part of every student’s registration; the collection to be made upon registration in the way that the Minnesota Union fee is now collected. Under this plan the subscription price of the Daily could be placed at $1.75 for the college year.
Respectfully submitted,
The All University Council -
The Board of Governors of the Minnesota Union
Grey Friars
Iron Wedge"
