Crowd assembled at the Anti-Compulsory Drill Demonstration 2, May 28, 1934

Black and white print photograph depicting a crowd of people on the lawn and sidewalk in front of the Minnesota Union Building, also known as 216 Pillsbury Drive, taking part in and/or observing an Anti-Compulsory Drill Demonstration. The group is composed of people in military uniforms as well as plain civilian clothing, to included dresses and suits. Four (4) persons within the crowd are holding signs. Text of two (2) of the signs are visible in the photograph, "Schools not Battleships," and "Compulsory Drill Must Go." The entrance of the building is obscured by the crowd. On the second story of the building are two (2) sets of windows. Six (6) persons are looking out of the windows on the far left of the image. A banner with the text, "So Drill is a Dead Issue" written on it hangs on the window edge of the second set of windows. An American flag hangs across an adjacent window. A person in a uniform is standing on the window edge behind the banner. Most of the crowd is looking up at the persons in the second story windows, but a handful of persons in the foreground of the image are looking back at the camera. The exterior of the building has foliage, ivy, growing up alongside the building, framing the windows.
