Description

Image of a clipping of a newspaper editorial titled, "A New Policy," edited from a digitized version of a page from the May 14, 1903 issue of the The Minnesota Daily student newspaper (page 2). The text is as follows:

"Heretofore it has not been customary for the Daily to advocate or uphold in its editorial column a definite policy in regard to University activities or interests. Our editorials have as a rule simply been facetious comments upon affairs of no more than passing interest to the student body, while the broader and more vital University interests we have passed over without committing ourselves to any given policy regarding them.

It seems that the time has now come for the Daily to extend its sphere of influence to the fullest possible extent by advocating certain definite policies in regard to these more important activities in which the student body are so vitally interested and concerned.

Problems of the greatest importance affecting our inter-collegiate relations are continually arising, and the policies we are now inaugurating in regard to them will in a large measure determine our standing and importance among the colleges of the West for some time to come.

In view of this fact it seems only right and proper that the Daily should use what influence it may have in supporting and maintaining those policies which it regards as the most compatible with the future welfare of the University; and hereafter it will be our endeavor to discuss such problems as they may arise from time to time, and advocate some definite policy in regard to them. In our treatment of these questions we will strive to be fair and impartial, and our columns will be open at any time to communications from those who have pertinent suggestions to make in regard to any of the vital problems of University life.

A University Daily, in our opinion, has a wider and larger sphere than simply to collect and print the news as it comes to hand. It should stand for some settled principles, and it should advocate and maintain those principles in an honest and fearless manner, using its influence for the betterment and improvement of the University which it represents. And hereafter it will be the endeavour of the Minnesota Daily to establish and maintain a policy which it deems to be for the best interest of the University of Minnesota."
