Description

Image of a clipping of a letter to the editor titled, "Shall It Be a Daily?," edited from a digitized version of a page from the December 16, 1899 issue of the Ariel student newspaper (161). The text is displayed as it originally appeared on the page layout. The text is as follows:

"To The Editor of The Ariel: - I have heard that there is some talk of changing the Ariel from its weekly character to a daily or tri-weekly. May I state the case as it appears to one who has had more or less to do with journalism during the past three years, and who appreciates any indication of advancement along that line of work?

The weekly paper as a news medium is a thing of the past, just as truly as the weekly post no longer is sufficient to convey our mail. The weakness of a weekly lies in its nature, not in the way it is managed. The Ariel is well handled and has an able corps of editors, but owing to its nature, it cannot be a newspaper, and simply gives the student a review of what has happened all the way from a week to two days ago. To be candid one gets more information about what is happening in the University from the city dailies than from the college weekly.

The advantage of having a crisp, up-to-date daily means more interest in college affairs of all kinds as has been amply demonstrated by “Foot Ball.” From a business point of view the advantage of a daily is one hundred per cent greater than that of a weekly. Advertisers feel that a weekly is a poor medium to advertise in, as is shown by the very fact that the advertising receipts of the Ariel have fallen off markedly in the past two years. Merchants will advertise in a daily as is proved by the fact that some three months ago, when two Minnesota alumni decided to place a daily in the University, they got enough advertising matter pledged to pay for the prospective sheet. And by the way, had the appearance of that sheet not been checkmated by “Foot Ball” it would have taken a good deal of advertising away from the Ariel.

Judged by all the criteria of success, the daily is the best. Judged by the ease with which “Foot Ball” was run, it is practical to run a daily in this University.

The question is do we want a daily run by the Ariel, or do we want a daily that will run the Ariel out of the field? By all means let us have the former. We shall then have a paper suited to modern conditions, with the tradition of twenty-five years to back it. The management will show its progressiveness by advocating such a change and the students and merchants will show their appreciation of the change, by supporting the new paper, and there is no reason why the best college weekly cannot become the best college daily.
