Subscribers failing to receive the paper promptly are requested to notify the Business Manager."" The text of an editorial introducing the weekly issue is printed in two columns on the page. The text states as follows: “Here it is. The Ariel is a weekly. How do you like it? and shall it receive the support necessary to make it a success?
Heretofore the Ariel has appeared monthly. It was good and answered its purpose for the time - but it was only a monthly. Aside from the fact that it really was not adequate to our growing needs we were humbled by seeing institutions of much meaner pretentions supporting live weeklies.
Accordingly, the Ariel Association ordered a change last spring at the suggestion of a joint committee, consisting of the outgoing and incoming boards, appointed for the purpose of reporting some such scheme. Practically unanimous was the vote of the Association that the paper should appear weekly, beginning with this fall.
The present board of Ariel editors feels just a trifle nervous in its new position. On the one hand there is the body of students - to whom we owe our editorial existence - the professor and the community at large, all expecting us to give them a good sample of college journalism and to serve it fresh and prompt once a week. And we cannot honestly say that we would it were different - we do not want you to expect less of us. However, on the other hand - and it is the “however” that causes your editors the anxiety - the board of editors recognize as probably no others do, that it is no little venture that this has been entrusted to them. It will cost a good round sum of money during the year to publish a weekly.
But it is not the size of the venture that worries; we foresaw that. It is the feat that may be the students who voted so willingly for a weekly will not support it financially that causes a little dread least the underpinning be not secure. It is thus that we appear to you with a little of apprehension, when there should be cause for none. With the pride which we have in our great and growing institution, which promises to enroll over 1200 this fall, our students would spurn the insinuation that we cannot maintain a weekly publication. We go further and believe that support will not be lacking, if the urgency is impressed upon the students. The object of this article is to make the impression - to appeal to the students to simply do their humble but essential part in publishing the Ariel, viz., to subscribe and pay their $1.50 in advance.
All this time of the year nearly all interest is centered in the new students. We would give them our share of attention and endeavor to impress upon their minds that it is their bounden duty to catch the loyal spirit at once and take hold and help support such student enterprises as the Ariel. Our institution is getting so large that you will not be able to keep the run of events right around you unless you read the weekly paper.
The old students must lend their assistance, and more heartily than they have in the past.
Of course, we expect every professor and instructor to have his name on the subscription list, although the books show that they have not all been there in the past. We shall discuss not only ways, men, measures and means, but also professors and their methods, if occasion requires, and it will certainly interest you to read what may be said.
To come straight to the point, then, we want a bonafide subscription list of 800 copies. That certainly is not unreasonable to ask in this institution. The price of the paper was put at a low figure, $1.50, and the response to our appeal should be hearty. Give us the support we need and we will try and give you a paper that will please.”
