YMCA Education

Promoting a Christian way of life and helping Koreans find Christianity were major goals of the YMCA in Korea. Bible classes were some of the most important YMCA educational offerings. For many, Bible classes were an opportunity to learn English, and both Christian and non-Christian Koreans embraced Bible study classes. Additionally, as a YMCA worker noted in a report written in 1909, Bible study classes in particular offered him an “opportunity for forming real friendships” with Koreans.
