The text of the article is as follows: The College Press Service on Wednesday named The Minnesota Daily online the best collegiate online newspaper in the country.
The contest, sponsored by Tribune Media Services, which published the Chicago Tribune, was based on “creativity, usefulness, design, editorial quality and public service.” The competition was open to all college newspapers and radio stations in the United States and Canada, and about 50 sites were entered. A $1,000 prize accompanies the award.
American University in Washington, D.C., took second place with The Eagle’s Web and the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky., placed third with The Kentucky Kernel.
The Daily Online has been publishing since Aug. 21, 1995, and has a daily readership of more than 350 people, giving the Daily’s World Wide Web server approximately 11,000 hits per day. It can be accessed on campus at computer labs and Walter Library or from any computer with access to the Web.
The Daily’s site is run by Online Editor Tom Broeker, Online Services Coordinator John Kluchka, and A&E Online Editor Adam Reibolz.
“It’s an exciting time to get the award because we’re in the process of redesigning the paper and adding lots of new online resources, Broeker said.
