Description
Cover of the 1952 issue of College Bound. The cover features an illustration of two graduates standing behind a silhouette of the Earth, with a scroll reading "Planning for the Future" in the foreground. Decorative illustrations of papers and vases appear in the uppper right corner alongside the phrase "You Owe It to Yourself." The upper left portion of the cover contains the following block of editorial text:
"With this special issue, the Minnesota Daily is inaugurating the first of what we hope will be many such issues in the years to come.
The publication of an issue for high school students represents our belief in a college education and our hope that all future citizens of this commonwealth will have the educational opportunities denied our parents.
The general increase in the level of education poses a challenge to all of us. It is not merely enough to go to school for four years just to get a degree. That degree will be meaningless unless the person acquiring it has done his best to make the education meaningful -- to make it a worthwhile preparation for later life.
We have not tried to make this a 'recruiting' edition; though this newspaper is published at the University of Minnesota. There are too many good colleges and Universities throughout this and neighboring states, all with much to offer to students, to claim that any one university is best for all students in all things.
But the various phases of college life, explained in terms and using examples with which this staff is familiar, are what you will find throughout this issue of the Daily.
Students must face uncertain times in the years ahead. It is possible many of us will be unable to finish our college career before we must be called into the service of the United States. Even educators have found it hard to advise students what to do in the present circumstances.
But most of us who have been to college, who are on the verge of getting our degrees can only advise: Go to school while you can. One can hardly help but admire the fortitude of persons who decide rather late in life that they need a college education. Usually, they are superior students, but think how much better work they might have done and how their earning power would have increased in the intervening years.
Even a hitch in service can make little difference in the long run. You owe it to yourself to get training both in citizenship and in the specific field in which you wish to work.
You owe it to yourself."
