Description
Graphic image of a composite of two digitized images, one overlaid on top of the other. The image includes the page of the digitized version of the October 24, 1918 issue of The Official Daily Bulletin. The page is tattered on the edges with small tears and pieces missing and is yellowed from age. The title "University of Minnesota Official Daily Bulletin" is displayed at the top of the page. Beneath it is text that indicates the volume, date, and number of the publication, "Vol. 1 October 24, 1918 No. 2." The visible text on the page is as follows:
"In order that there may be no possible misunderstanding about the opening of the University for civilian students, it should be officially stated that the decision was based upon the recommendation of the Director of the University Health Service, Dr. John Sundwall, and met with the full approval of the State Health Officer, Dr. H.M. Bracken. There has been no friction whatsoever between the health authorities. The City Health Officer upon his own initiative stated that the University, being a state institution, did not fall under his jurisdiction and that the decision of Dr. Bracken should be final. The University wishes to have it clearly understood that at all times it stands ready to cooperate fully with the regularly constituted authorities of the state, and that its present action is no exception to the rule.
M.L. Burton, President"
Overlaid on top of the Official Daily Bulletin page is a digitized version of an illustration from page 265 of The Gopher Student Yearbook, Volume 33, 1920 which depicts 3 caricature drawings of 3 students in military uniforms, one green, one brown, one blue. Each student is holding a gun with both hands in front of their bodies. A brown and green illustration of the Armory building and trees is in the background behind the students. The text, "S.A.T.C." in capitol letters is printed beneath the illustration.
