Description

Image of a clipping of a newspaper article titled, "Minnesota Daily Will Include 'Mag' and Minnehaha as Result of Merger," edited from a digitized version of the October 10, 1917 issue of The Minnesota Daily student newspaper. The text of the article is as follows:

"The desire to get out the strongest and most effective Minnesota Daily in the history of the university has resulted in the merging of interests of the Minnesota Daily, the Minnesota Magazine and the Minnehaha for the period of the war.

The agreement to combine forces was reached at a meeting of representatives of the three publications, the Administrative Board, the All-University Council, the Senior Advisors, the Women’s Athletic Association, the Women’s Self-Government Association and the Junior Advisors.

Daily to Have Departments
The generous response to the call for volunteers last spring has heavily depleted the number of experienced men on the staffs of the college publications and was a strong inducement for the pooling of forces.

The Minnesota Magazine and the Minnehaha will be represented in the Daily by departments which will be run under the names of the publications.

Johnson is Editor.
Vincent Johnson, a junior in the academic college, is acting as editor-in-chief of the Daily staff; Clinton Boo is managing editor, and John W. Boyle, an academic senior, is business manager. Muriel Fairbanks has charge of the magazine section in the daily, and Mary K. Hartung, former managing editor of the Minnehaha, is chief of the Minnehaha organization. The new arrangement means that the Gopher and the Minnesota Law Review will be the only other publications on the campus.

The resolutions adopted last spring follow:

Whereas, because of the splendid patriotic response of students of the university last spring, the staffs of the Minnesota Daily, the Minnehaha and the Minnesota Magazine have been almost entirely depleted;

Therefore, the undersigned believe and are agreed that the best interests of the university demand that the three publications be combined as one - an eight page daily paper known as the Minnesota Daily.

The first purpose of the staffs shall be the publication of the strongest and most effective Minnesota Daily in the history of this university.

As far as possible the identity of the staffs of each publication shall be retained so that the spirit and traditions of the Minnehaha and of the Magazine shall live. Each staff shall have certain space in the Daily regularly, under the names of the Minnehaha and the Minnesota Magazine."
