The Minnesota Daily
The publication of a daily newspaper at the University of Minnesota which is begun today, calls for a few words from the editors as to the conditions which have brought it about, the object and end which it shall endeavor to attain, and the things which are essentially necessary to its success.
For at least six years, the matter of starting a daily paper at the University has been agitated. Several times has the Ariel Association voted for a daily, and as many times had the board of editors quietly vetoed the matter by refusing to publish such a paper. Many of the students and a majority of the members of the faculty have for a long time realized the fact that the Ariel, as a weekly, was not supplying the needs of this great institution, and they have been demanding the change which is today brought about. Last fall, when through the enthusiasm and public spirit of a half dozen students and one or two members of the faculty, Football was published and distributed free to all the students, the necessity for a daily newspaper which should represent all the interests at the University the year around came home with added force to a greater number of students than before, and the demand for the inauguration of such a paper became more marked. A movement was organized inside the Ariel Association, and at the annual meeting of that body, a committee was appointed to draw up a scheme for a daily newspaper. After careful consideration on the part of the members of that committee, the plan under which this board of editors operates was adopted, and reported back to the association, which promptly accepted the same, and the Minnesota Daily is published for the first time today as the result.
The object of the Minnesota Daily shall be - in a few words - to do for the University of Minnesota as an institution of learning and as a student center, what the newspapers of our great cities are doing for those cities as municipalities and as markets. In other words, the aim of the paper shall be to furnish news which is particularly interesting to the University as a whole, or to any considerable element or number therein in a fresh, honest and impartial manner; to promote in every possible way all projects and designs - athletic, moral or intellectual - having for their end the good, the honor or the advancement of the University of Minnesota; and to represent the students, the alumni, and the members of the faculty in all matters of general interest connected with University life. In carrying out this design, the editors will use their utmost endeavors to faithfully and intelligently judge the will of the student body that the paper may most truly reference what shall interest the largest number.
Steering away from didactic treatises and philippics, the editorials will deal with matter of live importance, in spicy, forceful and non-partisan manner, the purpose being to emphasize news items and bring before the reader in a more personal manner than is permissible on the other pages, matters which should interest him in his relations with his fellow-students, the faculty and other institutions of learning.
To make their effort a success, the editors shall confidently expect the heartiest co-operation of every individual connected in any way with the University, from the president down. That co-operation shall be expressed, first, by your subscription to the paper, and secondly, by the zeal which you exert in assisting the editors in getting the news for the paper. If the editors may count on you to that extent, the Minnesota Daily will be the success which it should be, and which, they are frank to say, they are optimistic enough to believe it will be.
That the University of Minnesota, which they so kindly cherish as their alma mater, may ever be exalted and never be debased through their means, is the most earnest desire of the editors of the Minnesota Daily as they assume; with no little hesitancy, their duties in your behalf.
We desire to make the Daily the medium through which the student body is kept informed of the sum of those events and happenings which go to make up University life. Our aim is to make the Daily so useful that the students cannot do without it. To this end we earnestly ask the co-operation of the faculty, the heads of all student enterprises, the managers and captains of all athletic teams, in fact of every one whose position enables him to speak authoritatively and accurately of the department or organization under his control. There is a natural advantage in this. In no other way can we hope to attain the purpose of the paper, in no other way can the student body be kept in close touch with University life or its interest enlisted in support of University enterprises.
Remember:
The names of the reporters and editors of the Daily.
That all notices for the next day’s issue must be in the office by 3:00 p.m.
That the office hours of the managing editor are at chapel time, and from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
That the board of editors relies on you to furnish them with items of a personal and social nature.
