Description

Image of a clipping of an editorial edited from digitized versions of pages from the April 28, 1900 issue of the Ariel student newspaper (369-370). The image is a composite of two (2) ""clippings"" as the text of the editorial is printed on two (2) separate pages in two (2) separate columns in the original layout of the pages. The text is as follows:

"For nearly twentythree years has the name Ariel been closely associated with student interests at the University, as the title of its official paper. Today it ceases so to be, its place to be usurped by the MINNESOTA DAILY. Started as a monthly, it soon became a weekly, and now as the growth and dignity of our great University demand, it becomes a daily, discarding the old name and assuming one thought to be more suitable and distinctive. As a newspaper it has long given the lie to that term; only tradition and custom, we take it, have kept it a weekly up to this time.

In the past it has accomplished a great deal of good, and its influence was widespread, but its days of real usefulness are long since past. We cherish it only as something that once was a power in University life, and as something around which the various interests of the University were wont to center.

For today we demand something that will be a power in our present-day University life. Whether the Daily which is to be started in answer to that demand will be all that it is hoped it will be or all that it should be, time and experience only can tell. One thing is certain, however, and that is that with the introduction of daily newspaper into our little world here, another forward step is taken toward the goal which we believe is destined to be attained - Minnesota the proud possessor of the greatest educational institution in the United States. And if the Minnesota Daily shall not in its sphere aid every effort to attain that end it will fall far short of accomplishing its mission.

In its inception, the Ariel, to a greater or less extent, was to reflect the literary standing of the University, but when of late years it has attempted to do so it has failed of its purpose which should have been to furnish the news of the week only. The Daily will not make the same mistake but what its real object shall be will be set forth in that paper and exemplified by its pages.

There should be no regret that the Ariel is no longer to be. Around the name may cling pleasant memories for those who have been closely associated with it as editors; on its pages are written many words that might be retreat with profit today; but the principle, the motive, which causes the practical man of this age to throw aside useless and unnecessary things, had brought to an end its existence.

Nevertheless the spirit which gave it birth yet ‘lives and moves and has its being.” The Daily is but the offspring of it. Time has come and gone; a new civilization impelled onward by the daily newspaper touches every portion of the earth, and today has touched our boundaries. And we greet it with no hesitating step, no doubting mind. We have been waiting its advent long. Now it is here. Farewell, Ariel! Welcome, Minnesota Daily."
