Description
Image of a clipping of the editorial titled, ""The New Daily - 'FOOTBALL',"" edited from a digitized version of a page from the October 14, 1899 issue of the Ariel student newspaper (61). The text is displayed as it originally appeared on the page layout.
The text of the editorial is as follows: "The latest development in the line of a University publication is a daily bulletin to be devoted exclusively to foot-ball and which is to appear next Tuesday for the first time. For the last seven years there has been an agitation each Fall to change the Ariel into a daily or tri-weekly in order that football news may be had as soon as possible. Twice such a resolution has passed the Ariel Association but has each time been turned down by the Board owing to practical difficulties then existing. The necessity, however, was a real one and would not down. This year the matter was taken up by Professor Frank Anderson and M.J. Luby; and the former talk and agitation was crystalized into the real thing - a daily paper. This paper is to be devoted entirely to foot-ball and is to have some special features, such as short biographies of the players, accounts from our former champions telling how the different positions should be played, etc.
The management is under the direction of H.E. Bagley, a member of the Law Department, who was formerly managing editor of the Ariel, and who has for some time been running a country newspaper. The exchange columns are to be edited by J.E. Guthrie and Fred Bedford, of last year’s Ariel Board. Each day’s issue will be supplied with news by two editors - for next Tuesday, Sanford and Mayo; for Wednesday, McIntyre and Ware; for Thursday Adams and Knox; for Friday, Richardson and Snow. Saturday a general view of the week’s athletic news together with all late news will appear in the Ariel and will be under the direction of Charles Ireys and Paul Hoyslin. M.J. Luby, business manager of the Ariel, will do his best to make the financial end of the paper a success. The purpose of the paper is to create enthusiasm in football, to get everybody thinking and talking about it, and so to aid in bringing success to our team. If this paper meets with the success which it deserves, it is probably that the Ariel will be changed to a tri-weekly during the Winter and Spring terms and to a daily during foot-ball season next Fall."
