Description
From 1947-1951 Clarence Dennis, professor of surgery, received funding from the Graduate School, National Institutes of Health, and the U.S. Public Health Service to support his research in the development of a heart and lung machine for open heart surgery.
In 1951, Dennis left the University to become the head of the Department of Surgery at the State University of New York Medical Center at New York City, where he transferred his heart-lung machine and additional research equipment. Dennis arranged for The State University of New York to reimburse the University of Minnesota for a portion of the medical equipment that Dennis moved to New York for purposes of continuing the heart-lung machine research. A reimbursement of over $5,000 was made to the Department of Surgery at the University of Minnesota.
