Title
William Blake
Description
Photographic scan of portrait of William Blake by Thomas Phillips, 1807. Portrait is a watercolor copy of Philip’s original portrait of Blake, set in a dusky cream border that arches over the subject’s head. Blake is seated with his hands crossed in the foreground, with one hand holding a pale 19th-century pen. The light illuminating the hands and sleeves suggests that Blake is leaning back in his chair, away from the light source. He is dressed in a blue-gray jacket with a creamy white shirt, slightly unbuttoned to show an unfurling white cravat at his neck. His wide, alert eyes are directed center-right, and his curling gray hair is combed back.
