Terrible Things (pencil)
Stephen Gammell, illustrator
Eve Bunting, author
Harper & Row, Publishers, 1980

Stephen Gammell was born in Des Moines, Iowa and presently resides in St. Paul, Minnesota. His father, who was an editor, brought home magazines, pencils and paper of all colors and sizes, always encouraging his interest in drawing. In the 1970s he did his first children's book illustrations. This self taught artist's illustrations range from precise pencil drawings to exuberant and lavish watercolors. A Publishers Weekly contributor remarked, that his "interpretations add dramatic punch and leavening along with a healthy dash of humor." He won the 1989 Caldecott Medal for Song and Dance Man by Karen Ackerman. He also earned the 1982 Caldecott Honors for Where the Buffaloes Begin by Olaf Baker and in 1986 for The Relatives Came by Cynthia Rylant.
