Paul LeRoy Holmer

University of Minnesota Rare Books and Special Collections

Paul Holmer Collection

This collection of Kierkegaardiana was begun by Paul L. Holmer while attending the University of Minnesota in the 1930s. As a student of Professor David F. Swenson, the first translator and professional proponent of Kierkegaard’s work in America, Holmer determined to make an intellectual career addressing twentieth century issues and views in Kierkegaard’s distinctive mode.

Over the course of his career, Professor Holmer assembled an extensive collection of literary and philosophical works pertaining to the scholarly study and elucidation of Kierkegaard’s work. The collection of more than 700 items embraces a wide variety of materials. It includes first editions of Kirekegaard’s works in Danish, translations of these into English, German, Japanese and other languages, and works by Kierkegaard’s immediate contemporaries and subsequent critics and advocates...
