Description
On January 30, 1957, the surgical team of C. Walton Lillehei, William Weirich, and Vincent Gott successfully implanted a myocardial electrode on a patient's heart tissue, which was connected by wire to a Grass Physiological Stimulator, that provided an electrical charge to the heart that paced it at a normal rhythm. This method was employed to control the condition known as heart block, which sometimes occurred as a side effect following open heart surgery.
