Description
F. John Lewis (1916-1993) was an Instructor (1950), Assistant Professor (1951), Clinical Associate Professor (1952-1953), and Associate Professor of surgery (1954-1956) at the University of Minnesota. He went on to become the first full-time member of the surgical faculty at Northwestern University in 1956, retiring in 1976.
While at the University of Minnesota, Lewis performed the first open heart surgery under direct vision in a dry operative field on September 2, 1952.
