About the Exhibit

K is for Kiss-Me-Over-the-Garden-Gate showcases Andersen Horticultural Library’s rich collections. Images are taken from rare books, herbals, antique periodicals, salesmen’s plate books, and vintage seed and nursery catalogs. Using the alphabet to organize the images within the exhibit, we show how artists, through the ages and in many styles, have captured the beauty within the plant kingdom with their illustrations of flowers, fruits, and vegetables.

K is for Kiss-Me-Over-the-Garden-Gate includes images by famous botanical artists, such as Redouté, Fitch, Ehret and others, and also unknown artists whose work decorates the vintage, popular horticultural publications. Many of the source materials used in K is for Kiss-Me-Over-the-Garden-Gate were donated to the Library by Elmer L. Andersen, or purchased with funding provided by The Andersen Book Trust, Friends of the Andersen Horticultural Library, and individual donors.
