A major figure in the 1960s Pop Art movement, David Hockney had long admired the fantasy illustration of Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac when in 1969 he created his own suite of 39 etchings inspired by six Grimms' fairy tales. The artist was fascinated by the stories' matter-of-fact acceptance of the magical as a facet of the everyday, and by the haunting power of their imagery, as in this austere but arresting portrait of Rapunzel and her fantastic train of hair.
