Ann Nolan Clark was an educator employed by the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs. Her books for young readers, starting with this one from 1941, played a key role in the implementation of the federal government's new, more culturally respectful approach to the education of Native American children. Velino Herrera was a Native American artist from Zia Pueblo, New Mexico. Shown here is his stylized depiction of ritual Corn Dancers, life-giving rain, and a flourishing crop.
