The d'Aulaires—European émigré artists who arrived in New York around 1930—credited Anne Carroll Moore with having coaxed them into making a career of children's-book writing and illustration. The couple, who always worked as a team, were awarded the 1940 Caldecott Medal for their picture-book biography, Abraham Lincoln.
