Anxious to launch her career, Beatrix Potter first self-published The Tale of Peter Rabbit with black and white art. The following year, in response to the strong Christmas-time demand, she arranged for commercial publication, this time with color illustration.

The first book on this page is one of the original self-published editions of The Tale of Peter Rabbit.

The second book is from is a first edition of the commerical printing. Doctor Kerlan's note tucked inside the front cover of this copy reads:

(This copy is from the author's own library which accounts for it's immaculate condition. It has all the "points" of the 1st issue.

  • (a)Flowered end pages
  • (b)31 colored plates
  • (c)Edward Evans name on reverse of title
  • (d)No copyright notice
  • (e)98 pages

The cloth issue is much rarer than the one in board, as fewer were done.)
