DC Comics' Superman, the first comic-book superhero to captivate a vast national audience, drew harsh words from psychiatrist Fredric Wertham. In Seduction of the Innocent, Wertham warned of the "Superman Complex"—the arousal of fantasies of "sadistic joy in seeing other people punished over and over again while you yourself remain immune." Following the establishment in 1954 of the Comics Code Authority, Superman's creators reinvented the Man of Steel for less hospitable times.
