Howard Pyle, who mentored N. C. Wyeth and Jessie Willcox Smith, among many others, and is generally considered to be the "father of American illustration," here pays homage to Caldecott with an unmistakable nod to the comic hijinks of the latter artist's Three Jovial Huntsmen.
