Randolph Caldecott continually invented new ways to enliven the printed page. Here, anticipating a cinematic device, the dynamic scene on the left-hand page fast-forwards to the scene on the right. Viewers are compelled to make the leap across time in their own imaginations, even as the king's courtiers hasten onward to deliver their pie.
